Introduction to Republic of Congo

Caution

The political situation is slowly improving in the Republic of Congo, but most of the country continues to experience uncertainty. The outcomes of ceasefires negotiated with rebel militias in 2003 still remains unpredictable, adding to the volatility of the security situation. The situation is peaceful, but sporadic fighting does break out.

Consular advice suggests central Brazzaville and Pointe Noire are considered relatively secure, but recommends that travel between the capital and the coastal town should be by air as road and rail links are not safe.

Travellers should also be aware that the deadly ebola virus has again appeared in the Cuvette West province in the Etoumbi district. If you absolutely must travel to the danger zones, keep yourself up-to-date on the latest developments.
